I approach therapy with a simple question:

"What do you want out of life, and what is holding you back from that?"

This question, and your answers, is where we begin the journey. I look forward to hearing from you.

Harmful Religious Experiences

You've moved away from your religious upbringing, and are making a new life for yourself. And it's good. It's free. It's full. But there are still occasionally triggers from your past life. Triggers of your past religious self. You might be raising kids and having to sort through your own childhood religious experience in the process. You may still have close friends or family in that religious community and are facing frequent triggers. Heck, even the news is pretty constantly triggering. Whatever the reason, you're ready to make sense of your past and reclaim the parts of you that have gotten locked away inside.

When you're in the midst of the religious community it may feel supportive, but the moment you try to think or feel something different, you realize there's barbed-wire all around you.

The Hurt

Harmful or confusing experiences with religious institutions or people may leave you feeling wounded, triggered, or even traumatized. You can resolve and heal from these experiences. Being taught you can’t trust yourself, and experiencing guilt, shame, and judgment are just some of the ways you may have experienced adverse religious experiences.

If you would like to explore whether you have experienced some level of religious trauma, you can start with this Adverse Religious Experiences Questionnaire: https://www.sanctuaryic.org/blog//adverse-religious-experiences (scroll down a tiny bit on their and you will see the Questionnaire).

If you'd like to understand how the messages you received about God have impacted you, why they still bother you, and what you can do about it then take this quiz What Was Your Attachment Style to God?

The Healing

Join the Anti-oppressive Religion Revolution. You are not alone in wanting to find a new way. The first step is your own personal healing and learning to trust yourself again.

Join "Trust Yourself Again: Reclaiming Your Inner Compass after Leaving the Evangelical Church"

  1. Reflect: We identify the direct & implicit messages you received and how they have impacted you.
  2. Release: You can release the negative and untrue beliefs you formed about yourself and others.
  3. Reconnect: Reconnect to your inner wisdom and intuition.
  4. Reclaim: Reclaim the lost and hurting parts of you that had to get locked away to survive, and the religious-aligned parts that need to be transformed.
  5. Re-emerge: Move forward whole, grounded, and able to trust yourself.
