The ecosystem of our internal worlds is similar and connected to the ecosystem of the world at large. The harmful -isms that surround us (racism, sexism, toxic capitalism and masculinity, white supremacy, colonialism, toxic individualism, etc.) create oppressive systems externally. These affect those marginalized by these -isms the most (people of color, LGBTQIA, disabled, etc.). They create chronic stress, lack of resources and opportunities, which in turn have negative psychological, emotional, and physical effects. The -isms also are internalized and wreak havoc internally as well (e.g. through perfectionism, shame, never-enoughness, self-doubt, etc.). All these -isms need to be recognized as a part of what we need to address through social justice and internal healing.
